Blue Duck - Term 4, 2009

What you will do

Learn about the endemic blue duck, which spend their entire life on fast flowing rivers. See the pristine river basin and the dramatic limestone features of the ducks' territories. Put questions to the Department of Conservation rangers who work in the Oparara River Basin. Track a blue duck. Find out about their nesting and feeding habits. Walk along part of the 48km trap line with 805 stoat traps in tunnels. Learn the importance place pest control has in the Blue Duck Recovery Project.

Where you will go

Visit the Oparara River Basin, north of Karamea in the Buller district on the West Coast of the South Island. Karamea is 'the end of the road' so far as driving up the West Coast is concerned. The Oparara Basin is part of the Kahurangi National Park. It is home to a large number of threatened species.
