What you will do
Social Scientists will get bucket loads of information on natural and cultural systems, and environmental and social impacts in a mining system. Visit two coal mining operations based in the Waikato in the North Island. Visit Huntly East, New Zealand's biggest underground coal mine. Also visit nearby Rotowaro, an opencast mine. Examine the origin, extraction, distribution and use of this abundant non-renewable NZ resource. Interview miners who are deep underground or working big machinery above ground. Compare environmental issues related to underground and opencast mining. Ride 4km down the Huntly East mine tunnel in a purpose-built vehicle. Watch continuous mining machines and shuttle cars at work 300m underground at the coal face. Discover how land is rehabilitated after mining.
