Kakapo - Term 3, 2009
What you will do
With special permission, share a helicopter ride with a kakapo and land on the beach of Whenua Hou (Codfish Island). Join DOC staff working with Kakapo on this restricted access island. Head into the bush to track a kakapo in the wild and administer a health check. Find out about the gadgets used to help kakapo. Soak up the atmosphere of Conservation Week and "get involved" as you learn about this world-famous conservation project.
Where you will go
Step into another world. Fly into Whenua Hou, a forested island to the north west of Stewart Island. It's home to most known kakapo. Without possums, weka, and Pacific rats the island now has an abundance of native flora and fauna, including kakapo. The island is a restricted nature reserve and has special status under the Conservation Act 1977.
