This is the third of four LEARNZ Memorial Park virtual field trips.
During this third trip you will see the first stages of creating the park: the terraces covered in grass and trees, pathways and seats, and the paved Ceremonial Plaza in front of the National War Memorial. In this field trip you will feel the excitement growing as the deadline to Anzac Day 2015 gets closer!
Teachers - here is a rare opportunity for students to become part of a large and very special national project leading up to First World War commemorations. Bring your students to Wellington and let us connect you with the people involved in the $120 million dollar construction project, that will see the undergrounding of State Highway One to create the new Memorial Park for all New Zealanders.

- On Anzac Day in 2015, New Zealand will commemorate the centenary of the Gallipoli landings and the efforts of our soldiers during World War One. Events will be held at Anzac Cove in Turkey and in large and small towns all over New Zealand. The largest event in New Zealand will be held at the National War Memorial on Buckle Street in Mt Cook suburb in Wellington.
When the National War Memorial's Carillon tower was opened in 1932 it was highly visible from most areas of Wellington city. Skyscrapers block people's view from the inner city these days but the tower still has a commanding view out over the harbour. The busy State Highway 1 runs along Buckle Street in front of it.
In August 2012 the Prime Minister announced a project to create a National War Memorial Park by putting the busy highway along Buckle Street into a tunnel so the park could be built on top. This park will be the Government's key project to acknowledge the centenary of the First World War and will be the centrepiece of Anzac Day commemorations in 2015. It will be a tranquil place where anyone can come at any time to reflect on the impact war has had on our lives.
In preparation for this field trip you will learn about
- the significance of the roading network as an economic and social asset and community space owned by all New Zealanders
the First World War and New Zealand's involvement
Mt Cook (Pukeahu), its historical significance and the origins of Memorial Park
creating a National Memorial precinct
the benefits of this project to New Zealanders, local residents and to the economy
the technology involved in large scale underground roading projects
During this third field trip of four you will:
- be a passenger as you drive through the newly opened Arras Tunnel
- see important technology behind the operation of the tunnel
- learn the significance behind the tunnel wall poppies and the tunnel name
- see how preparations are going for WW100 and ANZAC Day 2015
- meet students from a visiting school and discuss ideas related to citizenship
- find out how the War Memorial Park is being designed and constructed
- get a closer look at some interesting features of the park, including rain gardens, irrigation and terrace walls
- discover how design engineering and construction engineering careers are used in creating landscaped parks
- put questions to and meet civil engineers, environmental scientists, geologists, historians, digger drivers, managers and designers responsible for this project
Where you will go
You will fly into Wellington Airport and drive the short distance along State Highway One to the city, passing the National War Memorial along Buckle Street. Over three days you will get to know the Wellington suburb called Mt Cook but especially the construction zone of the Memorial Park project. Note, weather and other factors out of our control may influence activities during the field trip.

By their nature, LEARNZ field trips integrate with the higher levels of the NZ Curriculum. Participation encourages development of the Key Competencies around Thinking, Using language, symbols and text,

What's in a Field Trip
Every LEARNZ field trip has its own newly-built, self-contained web site ready for integration into your teaching and learning programme.
Teacher Support has curriculum integration, resources, newsletters, support and evaluation.
Prepare Students provides opportunities for student inquiry on two sets of image-rich background pages at reading levels 2 years apart,
(students can click to have those pages read to them out loud), online interactive and other activities to check students' understanding, and a glossary.
During the field trip there are daily additions such as a diary, video clips, profiles of the experts (ideal careers education),
a photo gallery, live tweets on twitter, and ambassador (mascot) page updates.
Live web conferences on our enterprise-level Zoom platform scales to enable multiple teachers to manage students putting prepared and spontaneous questions to experts (recorded for replay).
After the field trip, teachers are encouraged to take further action with their class in the community or to go on a related field trip,
or to invite a guest speaker, or to present what they have learned to a school assembly or wider group.
Teachers also fill in an online evaluation (more about reflective practice),
the field trip prize winner is drawn, and the final newsletter is sent. Content remains online for continued use.
