Tongariro Volcanoes - Term 3, 2009

What you will do

Discover the volcanic processes at work in the Central North Island. Learn how the unique features of this dual World Heritage area were formed. Put questions to volcanic experts such as Dr Harry Keys and learn about the Crater Lake and the threat it poses for skiers and anyone living in the Central North Island. Find out about the cultural significance these mountains have for Māori. See what role DOC plays in balancing the need for conservation with tourism and recreation.

Where you will go

Tongariro was New Zealand's first national park. At this time it was only one of four national parks that existed worldwide. Tongariro National Park now has dual status as a World Heritage area, being recognised for both its cultural and natural landscapes. This rare status recognises the area's important Maori cultural associations as well as its outstanding volcanic features. The mountains in this area are geologically young and are active volcanoes. Mt Ruapehu is the highest point in the North Island and is one of the most frequently active composite volcanoes in the world.
