Meet Paul the LEARNZ Field Trip Teacher

Job

I am one of the Secondary LEARNZ Field Trip Teachers

Job Description

To bring the world "live" into Secondary schools. I aim to be of most use to Social Science and Science classes in years 11-13 although other classes are welcome to join. "Live" means we will link up using audioconferences with experts, digital video and digital stills. Emails, web boards and daily diaries are also used. The questions asked are the ones you invent from reading the background material and completing the online activities.

Time in job

I started working as a LEARNZ teacher in January 2010.

Favourite part of job

I really enjoy going to places in New Zealand that are not accessible to the public and meeting experts there who are full of enthusiasm about what they do. That wouldn't be so much fun if I couldn't share it, so taking you to places you would never normally be able to visit like inside working power stations and up working wind turbines all adds to the enjoyment.

Qualifications

BSc (Hons) in Chemistry, PhD in Molecular Physics. Registered Teacher.

Experience

I taught Chemistry, Physics and Engineering in Universities and Schools in the UK and USA before moving to New Zealand in 2000. I was Head of Chemistry at Wanganui Collegiate School before becoming a LEARNZ teacher.

Interests outside LEARNZ

I am a football (soccer) referee. I have been heavily involved with the Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award scheme in the North Island and would like to keep that up in the Mainland. Love long walks with my dogs, reading and home brewing and wine making.
